A convent is either a community of priests, religious brothers, religious sisters, or nuns, or the building used by the community, particularly in the Roman Catholic Church and in the Anglican Communion. In modern English usage, "convent" almost invariably refers to a community of women, while "monastery," "priory" or "friary" are used for men; but in historical usage they are often interchangeable.

Technically, a "monastery" is a community of monastics, whereas a "convent" is a community of mendicants ("friary" specifying a male community specifically), and a "canonry" a community of canons [regular]. The terms "abbey" and "priory" can be applied to both monasteries and canonries and distinguish those headed by an Abbot from the lesser dependent houses headed by a Prior.

My fellow Catholics and anyone interested if you were going to enter a convent or monastery which order would?
Q. you choose and why? Currently I am leaning towards either the Poor Clares or Discalced Carmelites with the Carmelite order ahead by a yard.

A. I am not well versed in the orders, or knowledgeable enough about you, to help you make that decision. As a mental health professional with 20+ years experience, now retired, I demanded a thorough psychological knowledge of an individual before we began any clinical treatment, and I guess I apply that same self-demand here. I will say, or want to say, here, that I want to offer up a multitude of "Our Fathers" for you to help make your decision. I, at my age (55+), can remember when I had the urge or "calling" to join the priesthood, and, with extreme sadness I have to say that I didn't follow that calling. I also considered the Franciscan monks and the Benedictines, but, again, I failed to follow what may have been God's calling. … [cont.]
